Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

London Overground
Major advances in the 326M upgrade at sites on the North London Line were
due to be completed over the Christmas period.  The following new
structures should now have been installed: an interchange between the high
and low-level platforms at Willesden Junction, a road overbridge at Dalton
Kingsland and at Kensal Rise a staircase for the eastbound platform.

Marlow
The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead is pressing Network Rail to
electrify the Marlow branch allowing integration with Crossrail.

Sheringham
EDF Energy contractors have transferred power cables enabling the new
level crossing to be installed.  The planned opening date for the
crossing, which will connect the North Norfolk Railway to the national

Nottingham NET
Arrow Connect and Tramlink Nottingham are the two bidders shortlisted to
build Phase 2 of NET and are due to submit completed tenders in May 2010.
Nottingham City Council aims to award contracts in August 2011, with work
starting in in the Autumn of 2011 and both lines operational by late 2014.

Blackpool South
Blackpool Council and its regeneration company's plan to relocate
Blackpool South station several hundred yards to the south have been
rejected by passenger power and a fierce resistance campaign.

Cambridge-St Ives
The Cambridge-St Ives line, converted into a guided busway, is still not
open but in the meantime someone is putting it to good use:

passengers of the Ennis - Athenry line until late January 2010.

More competition through the tunnel
Following on from the report that German railway Deutsche Bahn can run its
high-speed trains through the Channel Tunnel comes news that the French
environment company Veolia and the Italian state railways are close to
agreeing to launch within two years a network of cheap, high-speed
services between European cities, including London and Paris.
